Just built the latest svn 24968 using make 3.79.1 with ./configure
--enable-static  -enable-gui  --enable-menu  --enable-debug
--prefix=/opt/mplayer

It works and plays.
But did receive a message saying that

Libavcodec has been miscompiled
and may be very slow or crash. This is not a bug in libavcodec,
but in the compiler. You may try recompiling using gcc >= 4.2.

Guess I'll have to figure out how to install gcc 4.2: using gcc 3.4.5
