If I remember correctly, this is the first case that someone complained
about that. All other apps that I use (Audacious/BMP/XMMS under Linux,
Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, WinAmp under Windows) do change
system volume setting, contrary to what you claim.

It's unreasonable to expect that we would make MPlayer use software volume
control by default to appease just one person.
