Just as a side note, GNOME MPlayer will detect some playlists [pls, asx,
simple http and rtps] so you can start it with

gnome-mplayer media.asx

And it will know to pass the -playlist option to mplayer before the
media. It does minimal parsing of the stream to determine if it should
pass that option or not.
