It's VERY possible, in most cases. Just read the documentation:

Everything you'll need is there. Thing is, though, that'll just
produce a DVD player compatible MPEG-2 file, as in it's the same
audio and video specifications, but not the file structure your DVD
player will want. You'll still need some program to pump out a DVD
image, and to burn a DVD. These are things MPlayer was never intended
to do, so it was never developed. It's been a long time since I've
had to author anything in Linux, so I'll leave those recommendations
in better hands.
