Could anyone tell me how to encode a list of BMP files?

mencoder.exe -of avi mf://*.bmp -mf type=bmp -o test.avi
[demux_mf] unknown input file type.

is there some alternative?

it looks like libavcodec can read a stream of bmp's, but I do not find in 
the docs how to use it for input...
