Recently I had the same problem but in Windows.

With this video:
http://images.apple.com/movies/us/hd_gallery/gl1800/480p/batman_begins_m480p.mov
and using this option: -vf-add expand=:::::4/3

It only happens with directx and with that expand filter.
In linux it doesn't happens.
