That is old. Please always try svn version before reporting problems.
H264 over rtsp is not yet in svn, but probably will be soon.

Newest version of live is not necessary, 2006.03.03 (or later) is good enough.

These two lines are normal: mplayer first tries its internal rtsp streaming code
(which does not play h264), then tries live555.

Maybe you tried an invalid stream adress?
For bug reports, please:
1) Provide full mplayer command line (preferably with -v)
2) Provide complete output.
For rtsp problems, an rtsp adress to test is highly appreciated.
