[MPlayer-users] Setting initial audio volume

Hello all,
I've browsed through the documentation and man page for mplayer, but I
don't see any way of setting the initial (hardware) volume from the
mplayer command line.
That is, I want to do something like:
mplayer -volume 30 ...
Instead of
amixer set PCM 30%
mplayer ...
(which wouldn't always do the right thing, for example if mplayer's
configuration causes it to use a different output device)
or
echo "volume 30 1" | mplayer -slave ...
(which doesn't kick in instantly, and pops up an onscreen display)
Anyone know a way?
Thanks in advance,
John Karp
