[MPlayer-users] radeon 9600 - does it work?

greetings to the people of the list = )

my question is this: how do i get the above mentioned radeon 9600 to 
show good quality movie playback on debian sarge using the ati linux 
drivers? "ati-driver-installer-8.33.6-x86.x86_64.run" is the version i'm 
using.
at the moment - frequent lengthy pauses - snail-like playback -  
unwatchable. i watch mostly divx, fmp4, xvid, and dvds.
the same card works very well with mplayer under xp.
 so: any general ideas? things i should look for and report back on?
please help - i am being forced to use vlc ; (
