Try this:

mplayer _record_some_stream_ &> /tmp/mplayer.log &
sleep 5m
kill $!

Then check /tmp/mplayer.log to see what the problem was.  If you need
help after that, you'll be able to attach the log file so that we can
try to figure out your problem.
