Any font format supported by fontconfig&freetype can be put in 
~/.mplayer/fonts. Sending mkvinfo output here could help.

Also, keep in mind, that with fontconfig >= 2.4.2 no fonts are ever extracted. 
Instead, they are read directly from memory, and -embeddedfonts option is on 
by default.
