They are installed.  However, it would be nice to know what mplayer/mencoder 
can actually do and not just what I *might* be able to do.  In my case, 
mplayer -ac help   in fact didn't help. :-)

Yes, that's exactly what I'd like to do because hardware requires ATRAC.  
The problem is encoding from some non-ATRAC format to ATRAC.

This point is not clear in the documentation.  Perhaps a sentence to that 
effect could be added.

I'm sure mplayer developers have already thought about it, but ffmpeg uses a 
neat representation for codecs (ffmpeg -formats)

DEA    ac3   (Decodes Encodes Audio)

Just a suggestion.
