-correct-pts did the trick.  What does it do?  I couldn't find any  
reference to it in the man page.  Also, VLC plays the file fine so  
perhaps mplayer needs to make -correct-pts the default or do some  
sort of auto-detection...  I don't know enough about it to say exactly.
