.src is supported by default, but maybe you need put a font file as
~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf, or set a subfont option in your
~/.mplayer/config file. Or you mean you didn't compile freetype
support with mplayer, then you need to get freetype to work and
re-configure and compile mplayer
