[MPlayer-users] Keybindings don't work (r24156)

I just downloaded and installed MPlayer dev-SVN-r24156-4.1.2 on a
fresh Slackware 12.0 machine. Immediately I noticed that none of the
normal shortcut keys work. This is on both mplayer and gmplayer.
Sometimes it would work if I invoked the program from the console, but
I couldn't be in the video window. I had to be focused on the console.
Just in case I copied the input.conf to the /usr/local/etc/mplayer
directory.

Now if I run it from the shell I do get this message

Invalid fd -1 in mp_input_add_key_fd

I have no idea what it means, but I am assuming this is why I can't
use any of the keys.

I used the following configure line

./configure --enable-gui --enable-menu --enable-largefiles

I am at a loss for the reasoning behind this. Any help would be
greatly appreciated as I am so used to using the keybindings.
