One could use sharpening with gauss filtering too:
a) "-sws 7:X"   # where (0 =< X =< 100) and X=0 is max softening and 
X=100 is max sharpening, IIRC def value is X=10
b) "-sws 7" and some option in scale: "scale=640:480:0:0:X   # for X
