[MPlayer-users] gentoo: mplayer plays audio files but DVDs play silent

This is almost certainly some kind of configuration issue I can't see in the
forest of relevant details. I have alsa kernel support on my gentoo
install. I emerged mplayer, it played mp3 files fine. I tried to play a
DVD, and mplayer complained of unavailable codecs (details below) so I
emerged several codec packages and re-emerged mplayer. Still no joy.
"mplayer -ac help" clearly lists the codecs mplayer is looking for (details
below.) Searching the relevant mailing lists it seems that the kinds of
error messages I'm getting were historically common, but not in recent
times. Hence I suspect a configuration issue. But in all the (dozens) of
threads I followed, it was clear that codecs were actually missing, and
probably would not have been reported by "mplayer -ac help".
During my own testing, I also discovered mplayer won't play m4a files,
reporting a missing faad codec which is also clearly listed by "mplayer -ac
help".
Rather frustrsted, I appreciate any help!
