The default downmix is from 6--->2 channels, which means that the only
speakers speaking will be the front pair. The rest will be silent[1].
Your center channel still might have a mute/volume problem. Maybe you've
verified this isn't the case, but I can't be sure from what you're reported.
I didn't see anything obviously wrong in your mplayer output, except for
one thing: 1.0pre8 is very old. You should upgrade to recent SVN. I
don't really expect that to solve your problem, but it might, and you'll
get numerous other new features and bugfixes.
[1] Unless alsa or your sound driver or something is mirroring the front
channels to the rear, which is true in some cases.
