Found a way without using md5sums, the command:

mplayer -nocache in.mpg -vo null -nosound -benchmark

will show in the status line something like:
V: 144.9 3619/3472  0%  0%  0.0% 0 0 0%

the ratio 3619/3472 can be used for PAL telecine detection.
