Check out dvdbackup. It copies the contents of the dvd to your hdd.
You end up with the dvd's directory structure, which you can then use
with mplayer -dvd-device /path/to/dvd/backup/ dvd://x. Or if you want
to see the dvd menu you can use totem, e.g. totem
/path/to/dvd/backup/. If you want to make an image that can then be
burned to a dvd, use mkisofs -dvd-video.
