Several Sony DVD's are protected with Sony's Arccoss copy protection (deliberately inserted bad sectors.).  Mplayer cannot play these.  (Although, some people have had some success with the dvdnav plugin).  Use either Xine or VLC to watch the dvd.  VLC can even rip it for you, so you can make your own standard compliant DVD to watch :)
