See my previous message. But now I see the files I should have been looking 
at:

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/CARDLIST.bttv

and 

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/CARDLIST.tuner

not to mention

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/README

All of which falls under RC's advice to look in the kernel tree docs, if I had 
clued into that at the time (Doh!)

Although I wouldn't have known what tuner I had until Nico prompted me to pull 
the card out, peel the label off, and get the numbers which he deciphered to 
identify the tuner type.

Anyway, thanks to all for their inputs and patience (and where needed, smacks 
upside the head 8^).
