I havn't used mplayer to play audio CDs in a while, and just discovered that
I cannot play them at all (playing the same audio CD works fine in
sound-juicer and xmms).

I've tried the command line
mplayer cdda://1
which yields:
MPlayer 1.0pre7try2-3.4.5 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team

Stepping: 2)

Linux RTC init error in ioctl (rtc_irqp_set 1024): Permission denied
Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system
startup scripts.
Playing cdda://1.
Option stream url: This URL doesn't have a hostname part.
[file] No filename
Failed to open cdda://1

Exiting... (End of file)

I've also tried

sudo mplayer -cdrom-device /dev/hdd cdda://1

(/dev/hdd is symlinked to /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd)

with similar results.

On the DTS side, playing that disk with xmms/sound-juicer yields white noise
(expected).
Since I couldn't play it with mplayer, I've tried ripping the disk using k3b
and create image only, which generated a directory containing wav files (I
didn't see an option to rip the disk into ISO image instead).

Playing back one of the wav files, mplayer reports the file as stereo, I
hear the music but the sound skips every second or so - like pause/continue,
so I also suspect that the ripping was not good. Mplayer cpu usage is no
more than 15%. The output appears as correctly identify the files as DTS,
and xmms plays the same wav file as white noise:
