Actually, the real problem with Apple's encoder is that they apparently
didn't have time to write their own, so they just re-used JM (this is a
common practice) with maybe a few changes. I guess you could say it's
capable of achieving good quality, but in order to match x264's quality,
it generally takes 10-50 times as much encoding time. Literally.
