The advantage of AVI over mp4, as discussed in the doom9 thread, IIRC,
is that you can have different codecs for playing Xvid, Divx, FMP4, etc,
based on the fourcc.  With MP4, you don't have that option, and
they'll all play with the same codec, no matter what they were encoded
with.
