They don't.  They only allow one codec for each format, unlike MPlayer.

On Windows, if you install two codecs for the same format, the last one
you install will be used for all playback, and the first will be unused.
 That's an over-simplification, of course.

Besides that, you've got the wrong idea.  There is no right and wrong
codec.  There just happen to be cases when the reverse-engineered, open
source codecs aren't complete, and the official binaries work better.
