I tried Stephen's experiment from Message-ID:

with:

CFLAGS="-faltivec -D__APPLE_ALTIVEC__" ./configure --prefix=/usr/local \
--with-extralibdir=/sw/lib --with-extraincdir=/sw/include \
--enable-xmms --enable-macosx-finder-support

and it built.
