MPlayer is about as efficient as you're going to get it, out of the
box. There's not a whole lot you can add on, especially when we're
talking about H.264. Just as a note, and as a fellow OS X user (iBook
G4 1.07 GHz), you're probably not going to get much better than 480p
at real-time, *maybe* 720i or 720p at a slower-than-realtime frame

Yeah, this is good advice. I managed to royally screw up more than a
few things when I messed with things I didn't understand.
