I don't see anything obviously incorrect in that command line.

Is the output in fact an AVI, or an MPEG? It's possible, given how
ancient the version you're using is, that the message is simply being
printed in error.

You can check what type of file has actually been created using the
'file' command, or if you want something more complicated and harder to
use, MPlayer itself.
