Don't hold your breath.  They are several years behind their own
schedule, and who knows how many more before they finally get to
even their first beta release.  In all that time they haven't improved
quality or performance over stock VP3, which was open sourced in 2001.
5 years wasted, and the world of video codecs continues marching on.

More than that, the performance of VP3 (and Theora) goes downhill
quickly.  It seems if you use a resolution large enough that a full
frame can't fit in your L2 cache, performance instantly goes from
_faster than MPEG4_ down to _slower than h.264_.  That means even D1
(720x480) is ridiculously slow.
