Many thanks to all for the help.
It seems that the problem was in the simlink:
in my experience it must be

 # ln -s /cdrom /dev/dvd

and not `ln -s /dev/hdx /dev/dvd'.
Now I can watch dvd's with:

 $ mplayer dvd://1

. But still a couple of problems:
1) the movie is not fluid, it quite proceeds by jerks;
2) I cannot see dvd with gmplayer: I do:

    $ gmplayer dvd://1

   and a window says:

    Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

   The output is the following:

$ gmplayer dvd://3

It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers. Try -vo x11
