What's the original aspect ratio of your movie? Movies with aspect
ratios that are wider than 16:9 have to be letterboxed to conform to
the DVD spec. It's also possible you have a 16:9 movie, but it's
letterboxed into a 4:3 video (some older movies did that).

We would need to know a little more about the nature of these gray
bars. What video-out are you using? What's the codec of the video?
Things like that. It could help if you gave us a console dump.
