Which Thinkpad are you using?

Where are you typing this command in at?  If you are in an xterm, then 
it will fail because you don't have any X compatible outputs.  You need 
some like these:  xv, x11

If you are in an X-term, then trying dropping to a text console and 
starting MPlayer.

Did you compile MPlayer or did you install a precompiled version?
