I compile the following codecs from source:

nasm -
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/nasm/nasm-0.98.39.tar.bz2?download
xvid - http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/xvidcore-1.1.0.tar.bz2
x264 -
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/x264/snapshots/x264-snapshot-20060720
-2245.tar.bz2
libavcodec - svn checkout svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg
(get it from Subversion
libmad -
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mad/libmad-0.15.1b.tar.gz?download
LAME -
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/lame/lame-3.97b2.tar.gz?download

For some reason, I have never been able to get Mplayer to recognize
LAME(for mp3lame) without installing libmad. Also, you need nasm for
XviD for the best playback. You could also install YASM instead, but
NASM works fine and has been in develpoment longer. When I use
mencoder, I re-encode using mp3lame and xvid.
