I haven't been following this thread closely, but I wanted to point out
that the way to do this with mplayer is:

$ mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /path/to/VIDEO_TS/

If you want DVD menus you can try the DVDNAV patch:
http://dcxx.fw.hu/

That patch will likely be merged into MPlayer at some point, once it's
finished, but for now it's still separate.

Other than that, I don't know anything at all about burning DVDs. My
specialty is getting video off DVDs onto a nice big convenient RAID, not
the other way around. :)
