I tried this on one of the .avi files which mplayer reports as XVID
and the frames I got were badly garbled.  I am going to try it on some
more and see if I get better results.  Per your suggestion, I am also
trying my existing method on .mpgs of the .avis I had already
converted.  I will let you know the results of both of these in the
next day or so.
