He's probably seeing something like this. Here is an email I sent to
the Times recently. Hopefully they'll get their collective heads from
up their collective <whatevers>, but it's not likely. This particular
problem arose with the standard Flash plugin, but very likely mplayer
will fail in the same way.

frequently get an error message saying that
To view New York Times Video, you must have browser
Cookies enabled, Macromedia Flash Player, and a supported
    Browser/Operating System/Media Player configuration.

I have a Flash plugin installed on my computer, which works fine
on all the other flash sites that I have tested. My system is
Linux running Firefox-1.5.

This error message appears, for example, when I press the "+"
for "More Video" that appears in the Flash movie trailer in
your article on "The War Tapes"; the trailer itself displays
perfectly.

I strongly suggest that you start supporting Firefox. Firefox,
which you don't support, has about a 10% market share, while
Safari, which you do support has only about 3%. It would be nice
if you also supported Linux, which -- though it has a market
share of less than 1% -- is slowly gaining in popularity.

I suggest even more strongly that you don't put in a test that
prevents an operating system and/or browser from displaying
content that they would be perfectly able to display if not
prevented by this superfluous and useless test.

Thank you very much - Jonathan Ryshpan
