Thanks for the tip. The file ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf was missing. I have now
linked it to the Arial font using the fonts installed by the msttcorefonts:

.mplayer/subfont.ttf -> /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arial.ttf
