If it helps, I use crop/expand to move the bitmap subtitles (the ones
found on DVDs) around. If I play a scope movie (2.35:1), I want to have
the subtitles entirely in the picture area, not in the black bars (for
projection purposes, subtitles should always appear on screen, not in
the curtains/maskings below the screen ;). So cropping a scope DVD does
this for me (interestingly enough, cropping only affects the video
stream, not the subtitle stream, which will be formatted to fit entirely
in the remaining cropped image.
If you expand a 16:9-Picture to a 4:3-Picture (by adding the black bars
below and above with -vf expand), you should be able to place the
subtitles out of the image (of course this cannot work with 4:3-Videos...
on how to expand and crop: it's all in the manual
