That's mostly true, though there are a couple situations where their use
is necessary or desirable. For instance:

* in a script; disabling audio/video output will make the identification
slightly faster.
* on a machine without any audio/video output facility; otherwise,
mplayer might waste time trying all sorts of output drivers before
giving up.
