If you're using rpm-based distribution, just install lame AND 
lame-devel package. Header files *are needed* for compiling 
mplayer with mp3lame support.

To check if mp3lame support will be enabled, please review 
configure's script output to enshure existance of following line:
Checking for libmp3lame (for mencoder) ... yes
If you'll encounter no, please look into configure.log for 
troubleshooting.
