[MPlayer-users] how to get status of mplayer?

I'm running mplayer under Windows, launching from a Python script, and am
attempting to get the status of mplayer from the Python script that launches
it. Currently I'm using stdout.read to read the raw output of mplayer, but
it's turning into a big tangle of regular expressions to get just the data
I'm after.

I'm told slave mode won't work under Windows. Is there some other way to get
the status of mplayer? For example, whether it's playing a file? Or
buffering, etc?
