Have you tried using the "neofb" framebuffer driver and 'mplayer -vo fbdev'?
It used to be a bit flaky a few years back but it seems to work just fine
these days on my NeoMagic 128XD based ThinkPad 240 with 2.6.17.8 kernel.
There's a special kernel command-line option, "libretto", that you might need
to use if it doesn't recognise the 800x480 display. The text scrolling's a
bit slow but that can be improved by using 'fbset -vyres <something big>' to
use hardware panning on a big virtual screen.
(Alternatively, if you have X, you could use XVideo to have the chip convert
from YUV to RGB and scale to fit the screen. That seems to work quite well.)
