[MPlayer-users] mplayer displays subtitles but mencoder doesn't

I'm trying to rip several short titles (basically a collection of music 
videos) from a dvd to avi/xvid files, including the lyrics subtitles.

This worked great for all but one title of 14 on the dvd. If I play that 
title, mplayer will display the subtitles, but mencoder never does for 
that particular title only.

I get no errors in the output log, even with "-v"; I'm stuck trying to 
figure out what the problem might be. Any suggestions what I might look for?

Here's the command I use:

$ mencoder dvd://24 -v -dvd-device /dev/dvd  -alang en -sid 0 \
  -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=128 -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=700 \
  -vf pp=de,crop=0:0:0:0,scale=480:-2 -o iw1_24.avi

There's only one subtitle stream for each title.
