Thanks very much for your reply.  I guess I didn't make it clear that I
need a compilation of the latest version of mplayer for a **32-bit**
intel CPU.  My system can run 32-bit binaries perfectly well; it just
can't build them.

I think the page you are pointing me to is:
        http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/downloads.html
from which I can download:
        mplayer-1.0pre8-1.i386.rpm
This seems to be what I'm running now, particularly since Greysector
news states:
        2006-06-17
                1.0pre8 RPMs released
and the current date is 2006-08-08.  I should probably download it and
try, but I'm feeling lazy.
