[MPlayer-users] Sound Volume Control

Hello,

I recently ran into a problem with the volume control using ALSA.
I have two sound cards in my system (a 5.1 Onboard (NForce4 chipset) and
a Creative EnSonic Stereo). I use the stereo card for listening to music
on the PC or occasionally watching videos directly on screen, so I use
-ao alsa:device=hw=1, and the sound comes from the speakers on my desktop.

When watching DVDs or other features, I use the 5.1 system (located
elsewhere in the room, hence no use for it when listening to music while
sitting on the computer) and output the video via TV-Out to the TV set.
then I use -ao alsa:device=hw=0

If then I use the volume control (on the keypad *,/), on both cases
the volume for the 5.1 system is changed.

I know I could use oss for the first (stereo) setup, and everything
would work just fine, but a) I'm eager to know whether this is a
misconfiguration by me or an illbehavior of mplayer's alsa driver and b)
I'd like to use alsa only and not some cripple setup with oss support...

cheers,
Alex
