Not sure here, but the fact that gtk2 and gtk2-devel
are not the same version may be the cause of the problem.

Also a quick check on the packages available for 
SUSE 10.0RC1 shows that gtk2 is version 2.8.3.

There are no special requirement for installing mplayer
on suse (al least that was the case with 9.2)
You run configure and make. Configure will tell you if
some libraries or packages are present or not.
Some of the missing one are provided by suse and
you can install them with yast, the others have to be
compiled from the sources.
You probably don't need to install ALL the libraries/packages
supported by mplayer. But it's up to you to decide.
