[MPlayer-users] Upgrade issues I am puzzled about

I initially had MPlayer-1.0pre4 installed. Apparently, I left off the option for it to play realaudio files when I ran configure. That was all that didn't work, for me.

Recently, I downloaded MPlayer-1.0pre7try2, ran configure and it compiled with no difficulties. Initially, I tested it with a .rm file. I did this BEFORE removing the old version, by entering the directory of the newest version and running nplayer with ./mplayer. It played the .rm file perfectly, and the keyboard controls worked as well. So, yesterday, I entered the directory tree of the 1.04 version and ran make uninstall, and entered the 1.07 directory and ran make install. Now, keyboard control no longer works. The rm file still plays just fine, but I have no control beyond aborting it.

How do I get the keyboard control working again? Why did it work when 1.04 was installed and 1.07 was merely started from the source directory?

Also, I musr be doing something wrong with the gui. When I first started gmplayer, there was a complaint about no default skin. So, I copied the downloaded the latest skin file and installed all the components into a subdirectory named default. That stopped the error message, but gmplayer doesn't actually play anything. When I start gmplayer and include a .rm file on the command line, nothing happens (no gui opens up). The last line that displays on the console is:

vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)

But, nothing else.

When I use cntl-c from that console, I do get an mplayer window to open up. That box is titled "Fatal error!" and contains the text "MPlayer interrupted by signal 2 in module unknown".

Have I built 1.07 incorrectly? Am I missing something else in /usr/local/mplayer directory tree?

Thanks for a very nice piece of work and reading this rather long description of problems that may have already been answered at some time.
