The mkv file doesn't include a .ifo file. If I use mkvextract, I only get
a .idx and a .sub file. The .idx starts with :

# VobSub index file, v7 (do not modify this line!)
size: 720x480
org: 0, 0
scale: 100%, 100%
alpha: 100%
smooth: OFF
fadein/out: 50, 50
align: OFF at LEFT TOP
time offset: 0
forced subs: OFF
palette: 000000, ffffff, ffffff, 000000, 7e7e7e, bebebe, 14bef3, ea12eb,
faff1a, 000070, 067506, 731f03, 095f78, 750975, 7c950b, ffffff
custom colors: OFF, tridx: 0000, colors: 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000

id: fr, index: 0
timestamp: 00:00:56:489, filepos: 000000000
timestamp: 00:01:00:727, filepos: 0000007c9
[.....]

Is it possible that mplayer reads the palette whereas mencoder ignores it ?
