I just checked a belinea, philips and a iiyama 17" 1280x1024 screen. 2 out 
of 3 featured aspect ratio 1:1.25

Since the pixels are perfectly square on a 1:1.25 monitor just scaling 
horizontal to max-width gives you proper aspect ratio. Black borders on 
bottom and top are just larger than on normal 4:3 resolutions
